Personal Safety Strategies:
Age-Appropriate Resources and Activities

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection's Kids in the Know program is a comprehensive personal safety program for children from Kindergarten to High School. The program provides age-appropriate lessons and activities on personal safety and exploitation, and provides opportunities for children to practice responding safely to harmful or life-threatening situations.

Billy Brings his Buddies is specifically aimed towards Grade One children. You can access additional Grade One level resources and activities below:

  1. Personal Safety:
    1. Click here to download our 'Personal Safety (Ages 5-7)' sheet. The purpose of this sheet is to provide parents and educators with background information on child development and personal safety. This information will help with making important decisions in the best interest of children's personal safety.

  2. Safety Sheets:
    1. Click here to download our '7 Root Safety Strategies' sheet
    2. Click here to download our '4 Root Safety Environments' sheet

  3. Activities: (The following activities are geared towards parents to complete with their children. Teachers are encouraged to print off copies, photocopy, and send home with their students.)
    1. Click here to download our 'Speak vs Keep Secrets' activity. An important component of child personal safety is helping children distinguish between harmless secrets they can keep and hurtful secrets they need to tell to a trusted adult. The intent of teaching this strategy is to disrupt dangerous situations children may encounter and to increase their reporting of sexual abuse.
    2. Click here to download our 'Safety Route' activity. It is very important that children choose the safest route to walk to and from school every day. Take the time to complete the following activity with your child.
    3. Click here to download our 'How to Create Your Own Instinct Story' activity. Children need to learn how to recognize their physiological response to dangerous situations. Their ability to identify when they are scared or uncomfortable is a crucial part in knowing how to react to situations. The concept of instincts is very abstract for children. Creating scenarios for them to practice recognizing the signals from their body will help them feel more comfortable to respond safely when faced with real life situations.

  4. Storybooks:
    1. We have three age-appropriate storybooks available that all reinforce one of our seven root safety strategies: Baxter Bunny Brings his Buddies, Hooty Know, and Teatree's Keep and Speak Secrets. Click here for more information.
